2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 revealed

2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 revealed

The 2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 comes with plenty of new styling cues, including a new upper fairing with a revised headlight cowl, giving the bike an aggressive and more modern styling cue. That’s complimented by new LED position lights, new hexagon-shaped muffler caps, and heat shields for a sharper profile at the rear. The footrests have been redesigned for great boot sole contact and advanced rider/motorcycle interface while new silencer heat guards and end caps are re-styled to give the rear end of the bike a more compact look.

The model already comes with plenty of MotoGP technology so it’s worth pointing out that with the 2012 model comes all sorts of new updates and innovations that are derived from the company’s rich racing heritage. All bets are off as to how awesome the bike is going to be.

Even better is that the YZF-R1 will also spawn a special World GP 50th Anniversary Edition that will celebrate the company’s aforementioned racing heritage. Only 2000 of these special edition models will be sold and they will come in the company’s race-winning Pearl White/Rapid Red livery with plenty of other unique additions reserved only for the special edition model.

There’s plenty to like about the Yamaha YZF-R1, and there’s no reason for anybody to turn their backs against it, especially when a special edition model is staring right at you at the dealerships.

Performance

The 2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 is powered by a 98cc, liquid-cooled 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve engine with titanium intake valves. Unique to Yamaha is the crossplane crankshaft technology that has proven to be a home-run technology for Yamaha’s MotoGP machines. Unlike typical inline-four engine design, where the two outer and two inner pistons move together in pairs with 180°intervals, the crossplane crankshaft has each connecting rod 90° with a unique firing order of 270° –180° – 90° – 180°. What this does is overcome the inherent fluctuations in inertial torque during each engine revolution, and the accompanying peaky torque characteristics. Instead, combustion torque continues to build, giving the rider more linear throttle response with awesome power and traction out of the corners. A forced air intake system is also part of the whole set-up, increasing the engine’s intake efficiency by using the natural airflow during riding to pressurize the air in the air box. This, in turn, contributes to the bike’s power delivery characteristics in the high-speed range, while the design also helps to minimize intake noise. The bike’s fuel-injected engine also takes full advantage of Yamaha’s YCC-T technology, the MotoGP-inspired fly-by-wire technology that’s used to deliver instant throttle response. The YCC-T combines with the YCC-I variable intake system that broadens the spread of the bike’s overall power.

Chassis and Suspension

The Yamaha YZF-R1 comes with a frame that offers uncompromising rigidity made out of a combination of Controlled-Fill die-cast, stamping, and gravity casting. The front forks are MotoGP-derived with the compression damping duties confined to the left fork, while rebound damping is precisely handled by the right fork, reducing oil cavitation. As for the suspension, the bike has a rear shock that features both high and low speed compression damping to go with an easy-to-use screw hydraulic adjustment for preload. This unit adopts a pillow-ball-type joint for exceptional shock absorption, road hold feeling, and damper response. In order to achieve maximum performance, Yamaha uses a bottom to work with the rest of the chassis refinements to provide the brilliant, crisp handling characteristics that the YZF-R1 is known for.

2011 Yamaha Star Stryker Chopper

2011 Yamaha Star Stryker Chopper2011 Yamaha Star Stryker Chopper

Next year Yamaha’s cruiser motorcycle subsidiary, Star Motorcycles, will be introducing an all-new addition to its line-up with the 2011 Star Stryker. The Stryker is a synergy of raked-out, custom-inspired styling and modern performance at an attractive price that starts at $10,990.

Powering this machine is a liquid-cooled 80 cubic-inch (1304cc) V-Twin engine. The engine sports 100 x 83mm bore/stroke measurements. Each piston compresses fuel to a relatively high 9.5:1 ratio and both cylinders wear a four-valve cylinder head operated via a solo overhead camshaft.

Fuel is pumped into the engine through an electronic fuel-injection system with twin 40mm throttle bodies and 12-hole fuel injectors. To enhance rider comfort the engine employs twin counter balancers. Power is routed to the rear tire via a belt final drive. In terms of aesthetics the bikes features a long and low stance and looks different from any other production cruiser on the market. The engine cases are blacked-out as is the radiator and shotgun-style exhaust pipes. Furthermore each cylinder features authentic looking air fins that give it the appearance of a classic air-cooled bike. Other complementary touches are the steel fenders and Star’s extensive accessories which allow you to customize the bike’s appearance.

2011 Yamaha Star Stryker Chopper

The engine is hung within a black steel frame and is a stressed member meaning it works in unison with the chassis to enhance handling. A 6-degree steering yoke helps kick out the fork to an angle of 40-degrees. Suspension is comprised of a 41mm fork and a linked monocross shock absorber. In spite of its aggressive fork rake angle, the Stryker maintains a 45/55 percent front-to-rear weight distribution which is a key Star Motorcycles handling characteristic.

The Stryker rolls on a 21-inch front hoop and an 18-inch rear wheel. Both wheels are manufactured from cast aluminum and feature a five-spoke design. The front rim is shod with a 120/70 tire while a larger 210/40 rubber is used out back.

Equally as big are the brakes with a 320mm diameter brake disc up front and a 310mm disc in the back. In spite of its big wheel and tire sizes the Stryker features a super low 26.4-inch seat height which should make it much friendlier for all rider’s. The Stryker comes in three colors: Reddish Copper, Impact Blue and Raven and will be available sometime in September.

2011 Yamaha FZ8

2011 Yamaha FZ82011 Yamaha FZ8

Yamaha’s sporting line of motorcycles grows with the introduction of the new 2011 Yamaha FZ8 street bike; a streetfighter-style machine that offers European styling and a conventional riding position with a sporting engine and chassis character. At an MSRP of $8490, it slots in directly between the FZ1 and FZ6R, Yamaha’s two current streetfighters.Beneath the 4.5-gallon fuel tank lies a liquid-cooled and fuel-injected 779cc Inline-Four. The engine uses the same cases as the pre-crossplane crankshaft-equipped Yamaha YZF-R1, but gets an entirely new crankshaft and top end. The engine operates with a conventional engine firing order, unlike the current R1, while the powerband has been specifically tuned for the rigors of urban riding with more low-to-mid rpm torque output.

Each piston slides within a cylinder that features a 68.0 x 53.6mm bore and stroke. Fuel is squeezed at a 12.0:1 ratio and the bike uses a 16-valve cylinder head, actuated by dual overhead camshafts. Power is transferred back to the rear tire through a manual cable-actuated clutch, 6-speed transmission and chain final drive.

2011 Yamaha FZ8
The engine is suspended within a black cast aluminum frame mated to a swingarm of the same composition, with its handling emphasis put on moderate-speed agility. Front-to-rear weight bias is claimed to be 51/49; suspension includes a 43mm inverted fork and a spring preload-adjustable shock absorber.

The FZ8 rolls on 17-inch cast aluminum wheels that feature a 5-spoke design. The wheels are paired to Bridgestone Battlax BT-021 sport touring tire in sizes 120/70 front and 180/55 rear. Braking components consist of a pair of 310mm discs clamped by 4-piston calipers up front and 267mm rear disc with a double-piston caliper out back.

2011 Yamaha FZ8

The cockpit of the FZ8 is similar to the FZ1 and is designed to be a balance between sport and comfort. It makes use of a standard, upright aluminum handlebar that is said to be positioned 4mm forward as compared to its elder sibling. The footpegs have also been positioned down 10mm and back 15mm. Seat height is measured at 32.1 inches off the ground and with a full load of fuel the bike is claimed to weigh 480 pounds.

Visually all of the bikes major components are painted black and the engine is hung out in the open without any fairings or plastic body panels covering it. The FZ8 is available in one color, Raven, and will be available in dealers December of this year.
